What is UPI and How It Works

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is an NPCI-developed real-time payment system that allows instant bank-to-bank transfers 24/7 using a Virtual Payment Address (VPA) like name@upi. It is free for personal transactions.

2

Set Up UPI on Your Phone

Download a UPI app: BHIM (government), PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, or your bank's app. Register with your bank-linked mobile number. Set your UPI PIN (4 or 6 digits) using your debit card number and expiry. Create your VPA (e.g., yourname@okicici).

3

Send and Receive Money

Send money using: UPI ID (VPA), mobile number, account number + IFSC, or QR code scan. Receive via your VPA or QR code. Request money from others using the "Collect" feature. Check account balance within the app.

4

Know Transaction Limits

Default UPI limit: ₹1 lakh per transaction per day. Higher limits for capital markets/insurance/healthcare: ₹5 lakh. UPI Lite: transactions up to ₹500 without PIN, wallet balance up to ₹2,000 — ideal for small daily payments.

5

Stay Safe from UPI Fraud

Key rules: Never share your UPI PIN — banks never ask for it. You do NOT enter a PIN to receive money. Be alert to unknown "collect requests" — approving them debits your account. Report fraud immediately at 1930 (National Cyber Crime Helpline).

  • Mobile number linked to bank account
  • Debit card number and expiry (for UPI PIN setup only)
  • Active internet connection

Is UPI safe for large transactions?

Yes. UPI uses two-factor authentication (PIN + device binding) and all transactions are encrypted by NPCI. Always verify the recipient's VPA before confirming. For amounts above ₹2 lakh, consider NEFT or RTGS for additional documentation.

Payment failed but money was deducted — what do I do?

Failed UPI transactions are automatically reversed by NPCI within T+1 business day (usually within hours). If not reversed in 2 business days, raise a dispute in the UPI app (transaction → Raise Issue). Maximum refund timeline is 5 business days.

Can I link multiple bank accounts to one UPI app?

Yes. You can link multiple bank accounts in a single UPI app, each with its own VPA and UPI PIN. Set a primary account and switch between accounts while making payments.
