How to Get an Import Export Code (IEC) in India

1

Create Account on DGFT Portal

Visit dgft.gov.in and register a new account with your email and mobile number. Verify both via OTP. Log in and navigate to Services > IEC > Apply for IEC.

2

Fill the IEC Application

Enter your business details: type of entity (proprietorship, partnership, company), PAN, business name, address, bank details. For proprietorships, the IEC is issued in the proprietor's name linked to the business PAN.

3

Upload Documents and Pay Fee

Upload scanned copies of: cancelled cheque or bank certificate, PAN card, and address proof. The IEC application fee is ₹500 (paid online via DGFT portal). Payment is through net banking, debit/credit card, or UPI.

4

Submit and Receive IEC Instantly

After successful payment, the IEC is issued automatically as a system-generated PDF on the portal. Most IEC applications are approved instantly. Your 10-digit IEC number is active immediately for all import/export transactions.

5

Update IEC Annually

IEC must be updated on the DGFT portal every year between April 1 and June 30 (even if no changes are required). Failure to update results in deactivation. Reactivation is possible but may delay shipments.

  • PAN card of the business entity / proprietor
  • Cancelled cheque or bank certificate (with IFSC, account number, account holder name)
  • Proof of business address
  • Digital photograph of signatory

Who needs an IEC code?

Any person or business entity that imports or exports goods or services from India needs an IEC code. It is also required for receiving foreign payments via wire transfer. Individuals importing/exporting for personal use (not for trade) are exempt.

Does IEC expire?

IEC itself does not expire, but it must be updated annually on the DGFT portal between April 1 and June 30. If not updated, it gets deactivated. There is no renewal fee — only the annual update requirement.

Can a sole proprietor get an IEC?

Yes. Sole proprietors can apply for IEC in their own name linked to their personal PAN (same as business PAN for proprietorships). The IEC is tied to the PAN, so one PAN can have only one IEC.
