Understand When You Need a Migration Certificate

A migration certificate is required when: (a) Joining a new college / university after 12th from a different board; (b) Transferring from one university to another mid-course; (c) Applying for PG admission if UG was from a different university. It is issued by the board/university you are leaving.

2

Apply to Your Previous Board / University

For board-level (10th/12th): Apply to CBSE (cbse.gov.in), ICSE (cisce.org), or your state board's website. For university-level: Apply to your previous university's exam/registration department. Most have online application forms. You will need your roll number, registration number, and passing year.

3

Submit Required Documents

Typically required: (a) Application form; (b) Original marksheet / passing certificate; (c) Aadhaar card / photo ID; (d) Admission letter from the new institution (in some cases); (e) No Dues Certificate from previous institution (for university transfers); (f) Fee payment receipt (₹200–₹1,000 depending on board/university).

4

Track and Receive the Certificate

Processing time is typically 10–30 working days. CBSE online migration certificates are available for download within 2–3 weeks. Some universities send it by post; others require physical collection. Keep the certificate safe — most institutions require the original.

  • Original marksheet / passing certificate
  • Aadhaar card / valid photo ID
  • Admission letter from new institution (if required)
  • No Dues Certificate (for university transfers)
  • Application form with fee

Is a migration certificate required if I stay within the same university?

No. Migration certificates are only required when moving to a different university or board. Changing courses or colleges within the same affiliated university does not require a migration certificate.

Can I get a duplicate migration certificate if lost?

Yes. Apply to the same board/university with an FIR copy for the lost certificate, your original marksheet, an affidavit, and the prescribed fee. Some boards issue a certified duplicate; others issue an attested copy marked "DUPLICATE".
