1

Ensure You Have a Valid Indian Driving Licence

An IDP is issued alongside your Indian driving licence — it is not a standalone document. Your Indian licence must be valid and cover the vehicle classes you wish to drive abroad (e.g., LMV for cars).

2

Apply at Your Regional Transport Office (RTO)

Visit the RTO where your driving licence was issued. Fill Form 4A (Application for International Driving Permit). Some states also allow online application via the Parivahan portal (parivahan.gov.in).

3

Submit Documents and Pay Fee

Submit Form 4A with your original driving licence, passport copy, visa copy (if available), passport photos, and proof of address. The IDP fee is typically ₹500–₹1,000 (varies by state).

4

Collect Your IDP

The IDP is usually issued on the same day or within 2–3 working days. It is a grey booklet with translations in multiple languages. It is valid for 1 year from the date of issue.

5

Carry Both IDP and Indian DL Abroad

Always carry both your IDP and original Indian driving licence when driving abroad. The IDP is a translation document — it is not valid without the original Indian licence. Check country-specific rules before renting a car.

  • Original Indian driving licence
  • Valid passport
  • Visa copy (if available)
  • Proof of address (Aadhaar, voter ID)
  • 2 recent passport-size photographs
  • Filled Form 4A

In which countries is the IDP valid?

India's IDP is issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention and is valid in 150+ countries including USA, UK, Australia, most European countries, and popular tourist destinations. Some countries may require additional documentation.

Can I use Parivahan portal to apply for IDP?

Some states allow online application for IDP via parivahan.gov.in. However, the availability depends on your state's implementation. Check the Sarathi section of the portal for your state.

Is IDP required for all countries?

Not necessarily. Some countries accept the Indian driving licence directly, while others require an IDP or a locally issued licence for stays longer than 3 months. Always check the specific rules of the destination country.
