1

File an FIR at the Nearest Police Station

Report the loss to the nearest police station immediately and obtain a copy of the FIR. If abroad, report to local police and obtain a Police Report (Loss Report). This is essential for the next steps.

2

Report Loss on Passport Seva Portal (If in India)

Log in to passportindia.gov.in. Go to "Report Lost/Damaged Passport" and submit the details. This helps blacklist your old passport number to prevent misuse.

3

Contact Indian Embassy (If Abroad)

Contact the nearest Indian Embassy or High Commission immediately. They can issue an Emergency Certificate (EC) for your return journey to India. Carry your FIR copy, any other ID proof, and passport photographs.

4

Apply for a New Passport

Apply for a fresh passport (re-issue due to lost passport) on passportindia.gov.in. Select reason as "Lost/Damaged". Submit FIR copy along with other documents. A police re-verification will be conducted.

5

Update Your Visa if Needed

If you had valid visas in the lost passport (e.g., USA 10-year visa), contact the respective embassies. Many countries allow carrying the old cancelled passport with the visa alongside your new passport.

  • FIR / Police Loss Report (original + copy)
  • Passport number and photocopy of old passport (if available)
  • Any other government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar, voter ID, driving licence)
  • Passport-size photographs
  • Proof of address

Can someone misuse my lost passport?

Yes, there is a risk of identity theft. That is why it is critical to file an FIR and report the loss on the Passport Seva Portal immediately to get it blacklisted in the immigration database.

What is an Emergency Certificate (EC)?

An Emergency Certificate is a one-time travel document issued by Indian Embassies to Indian nationals who have lost their passports abroad. It is valid for a single journey back to India only.

How long does it take to get a new passport after loss?

Since police re-verification is mandatory for lost passports, it typically takes 30–45 days for a normal passport. Tatkaal option (7–10 days) is available but requires additional documents including a sworn affidavit.
