In this guide
Step-by-step Process
Check Eligibility for OCI
OCI is available to foreign nationals who were Indian citizens at any time after 15 August 1947, or whose parent/grandparent/great-grandparent was Indian. Citizens of Pakistan and Bangladesh are not eligible.
Apply Online at OCI Portal
Visit ociservices.gov.in and fill Part A of the OCI application. Provide details of your Indian connection (previous Indian passport, parents/grandparents). Upload required documents and photograph.
Submit to Indian Mission Abroad
Print the application and submit it along with original documents to the Indian Embassy or High Commission in your country of residence. Pay the OCI fee (approximately USD 275 or equivalent).
Await Processing (4–8 Weeks)
The application is sent to MHA India for verification. Processing typically takes 4–8 weeks. You can track status online at ociservices.gov.in using your web reference number.

Common Questions
What are the benefits of an OCI card?
OCI holders get a life-long multiple-entry visa to India, no registration requirement for any length of stay, parity with NRIs in economic and financial activities, and can apply for PAN card, Aadhaar, and open bank accounts.
Does OCI card expire?
The OCI booklet itself is a lifelong document, but the U-Visa sticker is linked to a specific foreign passport. When you renew your foreign passport, you must get a new U-Visa sticker (called OCI re-issue) by surrendering your old passport.
Can OCI holders buy property in India?
OCI holders can purchase residential and commercial properties in India but cannot buy agricultural land, plantation property, or farmhouses. They are treated at par with NRIs for property transactions.
