How to Renew Your Passport in India
In this guide
Step-by-step Process
Log In and Apply for Re-issue
Visit passportindia.gov.in, log in (or register if new), and select "Apply for Re-issue of Passport". Choose the reason: expired passport, validity expiring in less than 1 year, change of personal details, or damaged/lost passport.
Fill in Updated Personal Details
Pre-fill from your old passport data. Update any changed details like address, name, or spouse information. Double-check spelling matches exactly with supporting documents.
Pay Fee and Schedule Appointment
Pay ₹1,500 (36 pages) or ₹2,000 (60 pages) for normal re-issue. Tatkaal re-issue is ₹3,500. Select a convenient PSK or POPSK and book your slot.
Submit Documents at PSK
Carry your old passport (original), new address proof (if changed), and appointment confirmation. Biometrics and photo will be taken again. Old passport is usually returned after impounding.
Track and Receive New Passport
Police verification may be waived for straightforward renewals. Track your application online. New passport is delivered by Speed Post within 30 days (normal) or 7–10 days (Tatkaal).

Common Questions
Can I travel with an expired passport?
No. An expired passport is not a valid travel document. Apply for renewal well before expiry — many countries require at least 6 months validity beyond your travel date.
Is police verification required for passport renewal?
For normal re-issue with no change in personal details, post-police verification may be done later. However, if address has changed or it is a Tatkaal application, prior police verification is conducted.
When should I renew my passport?
Renew when the passport has less than 1 year validity or all pages are used. For international travel, renew at least 6–12 months before expiry since many countries require 6 months validity.
