1

Visit the Income Tax Portal

Go to incometax.gov.in. Click "Login" and enter your PAN number as your User ID.

2

Go to e-File > Income Tax Returns

From the dashboard, click "e-File" > "Income Tax Returns" > "File Income Tax Return". Select Assessment Year and filing mode as Online.

3

Select Assessment Year and ITR Form

Select the Assessment Year. For most salaried employees with income from one employer and no capital gains, choose ITR-1 (Sahaj).

4

Review Pre-filled Data

Income, TDS, and deductions are pre-filled from Form 16 and AIS/TIS. Carefully review each section — salary, other income, deductions, taxes paid — and correct any errors.

5

Claim Deductions

If opting for old regime, enter deductions under 80C, 80D, 80G, HRA, home loan interest, etc. Ensure all values match your actual documents.

6

Verify Tax Payable or Refund

The portal auto-calculates your tax. If tax is payable, pay via Challan 280 before filing. If refund is due, it will be credited to your pre-validated bank account.

7

Submit and e-Verify

Click "Submit". Then e-verify using Aadhaar OTP, Net Banking, or Digital Signature within 30 days. Your ITR is complete only after e-verification.

  • Form 16 (from employer)
  • Form 26AS / Annual Information Statement (AIS)
  • Bank account statements for interest income
  • Proof of investments for deductions (80C, 80D, etc.)
  • Home loan certificate for interest deduction

What is the last date to file ITR?

The due date for salaried individuals is July 31st of the assessment year. If you miss it, you can file a belated return up to December 31st with a late fee of ₹1,000–₹5,000.
